Lets remember, planes need to be light! You do not want to add extra weight. Painting can add a huge amount of weight! Plating adds the least amount possible! Not to mention that Aluminum just coroddes to shit in no time! Just add some water, a little bit of salt and your landing gear is turned to shit in no time!
